An in vitro study of canine cryopoor plasma to correct vitamin K–dependent coagulopathy in dogs

OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) with cryopoor (CPP) to treat vitamin K-dependent factor deficiency in a canine vitro setting. DESIGN In laboratory study. SETTING University veterinary medical teaching hospital. ANIMALS Seven units FFP and 6 CPP from unique donors university blood bank. INTERVENTIONS Canine was adsorbed by oral barium sulfate suspension mimic coagulopathy. A sequential mixing study completed adding FPP or plasma. Measurements prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin (aPTT), fibrinogen, activities factors II, VII, IX (FII, FVII, FIX) were compared between 2 treatment groups. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS When comparing addition plasma, following had no statistical significance: PT (P = 0.94), aPTT (P = 0.66), FII (P = 0.05), FIX (P = 0.90). There dose-dependent decrease increase FIX. contrast, after either FFP, there significant difference groups for concentration fibrinogen (P = 0.005) activity FVII (P = 0.044), resulting greater FVII. X (FX) initially included but later excluded because FX appeared be continually even FFP. CONCLUSIONS partially corrected coagulation times same degree as CPP, generally less expensive than may provide an alternative option coagulopathies, although vivo testing is needed.
